Organise categories

Goal: keep the category structure in line with your life, and give each category its amount.

Create a category

You: Create a Pets category in Everyday.

The agent finds the group’s id with list_category_groups (YNAB’s system groups are left out):

A name already used in the group is refused, whatever its case.

Rename or move a category

Pass category_group_id to move the category to another group, with or without a new name. Transactions and amounts stay attached to it. To go back, call again with the previous name and group, which the answer gives.

The amount is absolute: it replaces what was budgeted. month is "current" or YYYY-MM-01; "current" is resolved to the actual month so that an undo later acts on the right one.

Set a category’s target

Ask “save 1,200 for the holidays by June 2027” or “put aside 50 a month for the car”: set_category_target sets the target YNAB tracks for the category, an amount by a date or each month, week or year; with no amount it removes the target. Undo restores the previous target, except one set in YNAB’s app as monthly funding, a target balance or a debt payment when it is replaced or removed; the question says so before you confirm.
